More and more organisations want to be free of the specialised technical administration and capital expenditures required to operate in-house computing facilities and the associated WANs or LANs.
Cloud computing vendors offer the desired freedom. By lifting organisations' enterprise databases, desktop software, user management facilities, WANS and LANs into their private and/or public clouds, housed in powerful data centres, far more sophisticated and reliable than a typical organisation can afford, cloud computing vendors relieve organisations from the burdens of specialised technical administration and capital investment.
In the cloud computing environment, organisations have access to their usual desktop environments and corporate systems through a web browser. It connects the organisations' users through the Internet to the users' systems and databases; but the systems and databases are running on a cloud.
A COGITA subsidiary, Cloud Region Ltd, has acquired the business of ASPX Ltd, a five year old cloud computing company based in Auckland.
Cloud Region's cloud name and brand is 2onions.
Cloud Region's facilities are housed at Maxnet, NZ's only Platinum rated data centre. Cloud Region assimilates very large LANs and databases belonging to organisations and NGOs into 2onions.
Cloud Region is the dominant cloud computing vendor in New Zealand's primary health care sector. The company plans to sell cloud services to Australia’s primary health sector - an undeveloped market.
In the recent Christchurch earthquake, in New Zealand one of Cloud Region's medical practice customers re-opened for business in a nearby church after its surgery was damaged. Other medical practices with patient data on servers in the surgeries were not permitted to re-open for business because Civil Defence had cordoned off much of the inner city precinct. The Cloud Region customer had the resilience to re-establish its medical care operations because their medical systems and databases were safely stored in 2onions – access was available from anywhere at any time as long as an Internet connection and a browser were available.
Cloud Region also provides cloud computing for the online booking operations of very large travel companies including Qantas Corporate Travel, American Express Travel, ANZ Bank Corporate Travel, the Australian Armed Forces and KPMG Corporate Travel. Earlier this year Microsoft Asia Pacific and HSBC Bank also chose the online bookings service which runs on 2onions.
One of COGITA's Australian pharmaceutical manufacturing customers is considering the purchase of a Sharepoint application originally developed by Cloud Region in NZ.
