product dispensed in clean roomOur bodies are a fascinating place. Taking a look inside the body has become a medical evolution. And behind it all is a company that connects scientists everywhere with more than 25,000 products spanning the spectrum of life science from genetic studies through protein identification, drug discovery, and process development.

That company is Invitrogen - a COGITA client since 1991.

Invitrogen helps researchers to move through their experiments more efficiently, resulting in a better understanding of disease and, ultimately, improved therapies. Supporting the scientists who take a look inside is just what Invitrogen does.

Founded in 1987, Invitrogen is head quartered in Carlsbad, California with more than 4,300 employees conducting business in over 70 countries. COGITA works with Invitrogen in New Zealand, Singapore and Australia.

Invitrogen has been a COGITA client for 16 years. Enhancements to Invitrogen's critical business systems including online internet ordering, credit card payment and consignment stock - all developed and managed by Invitrogen in partnership with COGITA.

A Subsidiary Moves

Invitrogen decided in mid 2006 to migrate its operation in Singapore from a Windows based ERP system called ‘Opera' (with Financials being on ‘MYOB') to a fully integrated ERP manufacturing software system called MFG/PRO.

COGITA expertise and Invitrogen's good project organisation combined with willing people and excellent knowledge of Invitrogen's business processes. Result? Sound migration from one ERP system to another.

Singapore is one of Invitrogen's fastest growing markets. Therefore Invitrogen has had to react appropriately to the demands of such a market. The Opera system's limited functionality was unable to support the Singapore market's demands upon Invitrogen. This explains the somewhat unusual decision to switch from a system with a GUI interface to an ‘old, green-screen' system.

Invitrogen New Zealand (formerly Life Technologies) has been using MFG/PRO for more than 15 years.  In 2001 the Australian operation migrated to MFG/PRO (running off the server in Auckland). It was a logical decision to add a ‘Singapore Environment' to the New Zealand server thereby taking advantage of the knowledge and the proven business practices in Australia and New Zealand.

The project phase started with an implementation workshop in late January 2007 and ‘real' work commenced in early February 2007.

Most of the work was around transferring data, adjusting printed documents (such as sales quotes, invoices, customer statements etc.) and building interfaces. Training was conducted in Singapore by the Australian team.

Invitrogen Singapore went live with MFG/PRO in March 2007 without major issues.

Take a Look inside the Project Team

The success of the project is a result of the commitment of many people in multiple countries and their ability to work together. Chris Becker and Rachael Miller in Melbourne, Angela Tsang and Agnes Koh in Singapore, Eve Langford-Smith, Sean Miller, Gary Minton and Neel Singh in Auckland to name only a few. A team of people in Invitrogen's headquarters in the U.S. and the COGITA team (Roger Fairgray, Kent Phillips, Sean Omeara and Guenter Niersbach).

Invitrogen's quest is to better the human condition through innovations in science and technology. COGITA is privileged to help Invitrogen support their customers better.
