 The IT Bluffers Guide to Virus Scanning
Virus scanning is critical for all desktops, laptops and servers. Virus scanning can however, have a huge impact on the performance of a computer system. Here are a few tips on how to minimse the impact and disruption.
If your computer system and database server contains no file serving, print serving or email serving (each of these have their own virus scanning requirements), do the following:
- On access virus scanning (files are scanned whenever they are read or written to). This should be disabled on your business system/database server.
- Scheduled full system virus scans should be run on a nightly basis on the business system/database server instead of using the on access scanning.
- Ensure "alerts" or automated downloads are configured so the results of the overnight virus scan are included.
If you have an Epicor system, clients on a PC, Citrix or terminal server:
- On access virus scanning should run on the Epicor client however it is recommended the following directories are excluded from the scan:
-- C:\epicor
-- C:\Documents and Settings\all users\application data\epicor
-- C:\program files\business objects
- A regular full virus scan on the Epicor client should also be undertaken.
