Dear Tracey,
The lead up to Christmas is always hectic. I think this is why most people need a holiday after Christmas. I can't remember any lead up to Christmas not being hectic at COGITA. Like most businesses, everyone wants things done before the magic day. We had some great responses from our first eMailed edition of Vision. Thank you to all who responded. Further on in this newsletter, you will find out who won the movie tickets. Note that all COGITA offices will be closed from 12noon Monday 24th December 2007 and will re-open at 9am, Monday 7th January 2008. During this time there will be a skeleton crew manning the boat. HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE AND MAY 2008 BE EVEN BETTER THAN 2007! |

| The IT Bluffers Guide to TOC Scheduling | What's this T.O.C - yet another geek anagram? Theory of Constraints (TOC) was invented by Eliyahu Goldratt and is based on cause and effect thinking. His theory was made popular in the educational novel The Goal first published in 1984. TOC teaches us that all complex systems have a single persistent constraint - that is the one thing which, more than anything else, limits the goal of the system. TOC focuses on maximising the throughput of the system. So what's that got to do with manufacturing scheduling? The TOC system for scheduling manufacturing systems deals with all types of manufacturing environments (including jobbing, projects, mass customisation and repetitive manufacturing) - and quite a few other environments, such as accounting and computer services and hospital theatre scheduling. How does TOC help? TOC scheduling helps to identify and properly exploit the long-term constraint (even if there are have wandering bottlenecks as your load changes from day to day). Typically, schedulers experience 15-30% increases in output, almost immediately. To find out how a New Zealand manufacturer raised its DIFOT from 50% to 95% with TOC principles. Click here. |
